Turn cooling off
Continuing to cool while ice is present can worsen icing and prevent meaningful diagnosis. Do not chip or scrape the ice. If safe, use the thermostat to turn cooling off and allow the equipment to thaw.
Check only homeowner-accessible items
- Check whether the filter is dirty or incorrectly installed
- Make sure return grilles and supply registers are not blocked
- Notice whether the indoor fan is operating
Why diagnosis matters
Airflow restrictions, blower problems, coil conditions, controls, and refrigerant-system faults are among the categories a professional may evaluate. Ice melting does not prove the problem is resolved.
